NYCC: JAMES CAMERON ANNOUNCES "AVATAR" COMICS FROM DARK HORSE !!!!!

James Cameron and Dark Horse Comics have announced a partnership to expand the world of "Avatar" in comics as part of a 10-year licensing deal.

While Cameron was unable to attend the New York Comic Con panel where the announcement was made, the director recorded a video explaining  that the comics will cover "the time before, during, and after the events of the original 'Avatar' film."

The highest-grossing film of all time, with a global box office haul of $2.788 billion, "Avatar" is set in in the mid-22nd century, where humanity, having depleted Earth's natural resources, begins to mine the distant forested moon Pandora, threatening the indigenous Na'vi. To safely explore Pandora, whose atmosphere is poisonous to humans, scientists develop Na'vi-human hybrids called "avatars."

Sam Worthington stars as Jake Sully, a paraplegic former Marine who replaces his deceased twin as an operator of one, and gains the trust of the N'avi, becoming embroiled in a fight to save Pandora from mining.

Cameron has announced plans to produce three "Avatar" sequels, filmed simultaneously, with the first targeted for release in 2017. The subsequent installments would arrive in 2018 and 2019.

A themed area called "Pandora -- The World of 'Avatar'" is also being constructed in Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida.
